Connecticut Sports Betting: AZ Sportsbooks & Legal Updates
Online sports betting in Connecticut commenced at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12th. During the seven-day soft launch phase, three Connecticut betting apps offered 750 clients limited hours each day before going full-time.
On October 19th, 2021, FanDuel Sportsbook, DraftKings, and Rush Street Gaming were formally released to the public. Later, Rush Street Gaming exited the Connecticut online sports betting business, and Fanatics Sportsbook took over.
The Path to Connecticut Sports Betting
Connecticut legalized internet sports betting and casino games on October 19, 2021. While the launch went smoothly, it does not convey the full narrative of how the state came to legalize iGaming.
Although Governor Lamont signed the bill into law in May 2021, the expression “patience is a virtue” comes to mind, as everything had to be approved by the Department of the Interior before any bets could be made. Legislation directed Connecticut to a modest but fully working online sports betting industry, complete with mobile registration. Retail betting is also offered at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, as well as lottery-run kiosks throughout the state.
The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes’ long-standing duopoly has largely persisted in the sports betting industry. However, this hold was not uncontested. During the legislative process, there was an effort to include the Connecticut Lottery and off-track betting (OTB) venues as possible iGaming licensees. However, on January 13, 2021, a placeholder bill (SB 146) was introduced in Connecticut, indicating that the tribes will be in charge.
Connecticut eventually settled on a three-headed monster. Both prominent tribes will have a seat at the sports betting table, with the Connecticut Lottery serving as the third license holder. In September 2021, the Department of the Interior officially publicized the compacts with the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes.
Connecticut officials were eager to maintain the status quo and add a little something more for the CT Lottery after more than 25 years of fruitful cooperation. Although there isn’t much room for competition in the current setup, it is argued that the two tribes’ gaming facilities generate tens of thousands of jobs and nearly $10 billion in revenue, which is sufficient justification for keeping them in charge and granting them near-exclusive rights to sports betting in the state.
Connecticut Sports Betting Laws
When Governor Lamont struck a deal with one of the state’s two gaming tribes for Connecticut sports betting and online gambling in early 2021, the state made significant progress toward legalizing sports betting.
Soon after, the other tribe joined in, and the implementing legislation was passed by the Connecticut legislature. Connecticut controls a variety of online gambling sites and sports betting in accordance with the revised tribal gaming compacts.

When did Connecticut start offering sports betting?
On October 19, 2021, online sports betting made its formal debut in Connecticut. On October 12, there was a digital soft launch with limited bettors and hours, but on October 19, everything became live. On the first day, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and Play SugarHouse Sportsbook were accessible. In fact, retail sports betting in Connecticut started a few weeks earlier, with the first bets being placed on September 30, 2021.
Legal Connecticut online sportsbooks
Three online sports betting companies were previously allowed by Connecticut law. They were SugarHouse Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and DraftKings Sportsbook. However, Play SugarHouse stopped operating a sportsbook in Connecticut as of March 2023. Fanatics and the Connecticut Lottery formally joined in December 2023. Connecticut Law On Sports Betting Promotions

Connecticut Gambling Laws

Penalties:
Players who engage in illicit gambling face a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
Illegal gambling operators face a Class A misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of one year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine.
Social gambling exception:
Private, non-profit games (such as home poker games) are lawful only when:
- Each participant has a genuine social relationship.
- Nobody makes a profit or behaves as the house.
In brief, gambling is banned in Connecticut unless allowed by the state, with only a few exceptions for legitimate social games that are not for profit.
Connecticut Online Gambling
Due to a recent gaming agreement between the state and its two casino tribal operators, online gambling is now permitted in Connecticut. October 2021 saw the opening of the first CT internet casinos, which were initially accessible to 750 players during a soft launch period.
Connecticut gambling sites provided 100 authorized games during the soft launch period, but they did not offer online poker or live dealer games. CT gaming sites fully opened to all eligible clients who were 21 years of age or older once the soft launch phase concluded.
According to Connecticut’s online gambling statute, online gambling companies must pay an 18% tax for the first five years and a 20% tax thereafter.
