US participation at Royal Ascot has been growing steadily in recent years with US-based horses and connections making the trip across the Atlantic to compete on the turf in increasing numbers, a trend that continues to add an international flavour to a meeting long associated primarily with British and Irish racing royalty.
The Travers Stakes
The Travers Stakes, held at Saratoga Race Course since 1864, is one of the oldest and most storied races in American racing and is known as the “Midsummer Derby.” Saratoga’s 46-day summer meet, anchored by the 157th running of the Travers Stakes on Saturday, August 29, the Whitney Stakes on August 8 and a stakes schedule worth more than $23.5 million in total purses.
The Travers has been the scene of some incredible moments in its long history, including Runaway Groom in 1982, who beat all three of the American Triple Crown winners in the same race. The Breeders’ Cup
If the Triple Crown functions as racing’s Super Bowl, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships serve as its year-end championship weekend, bringing together the best horses across multiple age groups, distances, and surfaces for fourteen championship races over two days. This year’s event returns to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, scheduled for October 30 and 31, marking the fourth time the historic Lexington track has hosted the Championships following previous runnings in 2015, 2020, and 2022.
Keeneland is back as host as the track completes a major $100+ million in capital construction, including a new three-story paddock building designed to enhance the fan experience for one of the most watched weekends in racing. Looking a bit further down the road, the Breeders’ Cup will be heading to a newly rebuilt Belmont Park in 2027 in what will be the first time the event has returned to New York since 2005, a homecoming racing fans have been waiting for for more than two decades.
