How the MLS Playoffs Work: Format, qualification, and MLS cup explained

How the MLS Playoffs Work Format, qualification, and MLS cup explained How the MLS Playoffs Work Format, qualification, and MLS cup explained

The MLS postseason is one of the more unique championship races in American soccer, mixing a long regular season with a playoff format that is designed to keep more teams in the hunt. But for new fans, it can be confusing to work out who qualifies, how the seeds are decided and how a team gets to the MLS Cup in the first place.

One other important detail comes into play for the 2026 version: MLS has 30 clubs divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences and each team plays 34 regular-season matches. At the end of the regular season, the top teams from each conference enter a multi-round postseason, starting with Wild Card matches and culminating in the MLS Cup in December.

How Teams Qualify for the MLS Playoffs

Here’s the first thing you need to know about the MLS playoffs: how teams get into the postseason. MLS has two conferences , East and West . The standings in each conference determine who makes the playoffs .

The top seven teams in each conference will automatically qualify for the first round of the playoffs at the end of the 2026 regular season. Teams finishing eighth and ninth will not be guaranteed entry into Round One. Instead, they will have to play a Wild Card game for a chance to continue their postseason journey.

That means as many as nine teams from each conference could make the playoffs, making for an 18-team postseason field. At the conclusion of the regular season, the 10th- through 15th-place teams from each conference will be eliminated.

How MLS Standings Are Decided

Regular season standings are based largely on points. A team gets three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. With each club playing 34 matches, consistency over a period of months becomes very important.

MLS has a set of tiebreakers to separate two or more teams who finish on the same number of points. The first tiebreaker is total wins, then goal differential, then goals scored. If teams are tied, other criteria such as head-to-head results and disciplinary points can be used.

The standings matter a lot more than whether a team makes the playoffs. A higher seed can provide a team a huge home-field advantage in the playoffs, especially in the later rounds.

What Happens in the Wild Card Round?

The first round of the 2026 soccer playoffs is the Wild Card round. The No. 8 and No. 9 seeds in each conference play a single-elimination game, so there’s no do-over for the losing team.

The higher seed hosts … and gets the benefit of playing in front of their home crowd. The Wild Card round is a straight knockout, with no extra time if the score is tied after 90 minutes The teams then go directly to penalties to see who goes through. The two Wild Card winners then advance to the Round One, where they will face the No. 1 seed in their conference.

Round One Uses a Best-of-3 Format

One of the most unique things about the current playoff format is the best-of-three format in Round One. The top seven teams in each conference get an automatic bid to this round, as well as the two victors of the Wild Card. The matchups are seeded, with the No. 1 seed facing the Wild Card winner and the other matchups pitting No. 2 against No. 7, No. 3 against No. 6 and No. 4 against No. 5.

All series will be a best-of-three series, with the first team to win two games advancing. The higher seed hosts the first game, the lower seed hosts the second game and if the series is tied at one win apiece, the higher seed hosts the deciding third match.

This format places a huge premium on finishing high in the regular season standings. A higher seed not only means a better opening matchup for a team, but also home-court advantage in the first game, and possibly the third, which could be a clinch.

What Happens If a Round One Match Is Tied?

And here is another key difference between Round One and the later rounds. All Round One games must have a winner but if the scores remain level after 90 minutes there will be no extra-time. Instead, the teams are sent straight to penalties. This is despite the series being decided by the first team to win two matches.

It means that one penalty shootout could have a massive influence on a team’s whole championship campaign.

Conference Semifinals

One round to go, four teams left in each conference. And those 8 clubs advance to the Conference Semifinals. Round One is not the only round with a different format than the Conference Semifinals. Each game is hosted by the highest remaining seed, so regular-season performance still matters in where games are played.

If a semi-final ends level after 90 minutes the teams play two periods of extra time of 15 minutes each. If the scores are still level after extra time, a penalty shootout is used to decide the winner. The four winners of the semifinals advance to the Conference Finals.

The Conference Finals

The Conference Finals are the two games that decide which teams will play for the MLS Cup. These games are also single-elimination, with home-field advantage going to the higher-seeded remaining team. One of the finalists is from the Western Conference and the other is from the Eastern Conference.

In the case of the tie, as in the Conference Semifinals, there will be two 15-minute extra time periods, followed by a penalty shootout if needed. The winners finally earn a spot in the MLS Cup, the championship game of the MLS season.

What Is the MLS Cup?

The MLS Cup is the league’s championship game that determines the season-ending champion. The Supporters’ Shield is awarded to the club with the best regular-season record, while the MLS Cup is awarded following the postseason.

The 2026 MLS Cup will be a single match. The championship game is hosted by the higher-ranked finalist in the Supporters’ Shield standings, giving the better regular-season team home-field advantage.

If the game is tied after 90 minutes, teams play two 15-minute periods of extra time. If the championship is still tied, it will be decided by a penalty shootout.

When Are the 2026 MLS Playoffs?

The 2026 MLS schedule will also feature Decision Day, the last day of the regular season, on Nov. 7. Then the postseason kicks off on Nov. 18 with the Wild Card games. The first round of the playoffs will run from November 20-December 2, with the Conference Semifinals set for December 5 and 6. The Conference Finals are set for Dec. 11-12, with MLS Cup taking place on Dec. 18.

The timing is particularly notable, as MLS Cup 2026 will be the final title game played in December before the league switches to a summer-spring schedule starting with the 2027-28 season.

Why the Regular Season Still Matters

It would be easy to assume that the regular season is meaningless once the MLS playoffs begin, but that’s not the case. Where a team finishes can impact nearly every step of its postseason path.

Under the 2026 format, home field advantages in the Wild Card, Round One, Conference Semifinals and Conference Finals would be awarded to higher seeds. The better Supporters’ Shield ranking also determines which MLS Cup finalist hosts the championship match.

So every point in the regular season is potentially valuable. A club jockeying for first place isn’t just trying to make the playoffs, it’s trying to make the best path through the postseason.
