Betting on horse racing without knowing the basic statistics is like watching a chess game without knowing the movement of the pieces. Below that surface is a layer of analytics that has been built up over decades. That is what separates serious handicappers from bettors who are just betting on the horse ‘s name or the odds at post time. Speed figures, form cycles, pace analysis,  all of them feed into the way smart bettors actually evaluate a race before a single dollar is bet.

This guide breaks down the statistics that matter most in horse racing handicapping, what they measure, where did they come from and how to actually use them.

Speed Figures

Speed figures are the most important statistical tool in horse racing handicapping today. A speed figure takes a horse’s actual final time and adjusts it to account for the specific conditions of that day’s racetrack surface, resulting in a single number that allows bettors to compare performances on a level playing field across entirely different tracks, distances and dates.

The most popular of these, the Beyer Speed Figure, was created by longtime Washington Post columnist Andrew Beyer and was first described in his 1975 book, Picking Winners. The key insight for Beyer was that raw finishing times were misleading because a fast time on a fast track surface doesn’t necessarily mean a better performance than a slower time on a day when the track itself was slow. His system accounts for that daily track variant, so a horse that runs an 85 Beyer figure at one track at seven furlongs is essentially the same quality performance as an 85 earned at a completely different track at a different distance.

These figures have become so important to the sport that the Daily Racing Form began printing them directly in the past performance lines beginning in 1992, thus making them available to any bettor rather than the private edge of a small group of sophisticated handicappers. In general, on a scale of approximately 0 to 130, figures above 100 are usually indicative of Grade 1 stakes-caliber performances, and figures between 85 and 95 are more indicative of solid allowance or graded stakes-level form.

Understanding Pace and Fractional Times

Beyond pure speed, knowing how a race actually plays out in stages is of enormous importance for serious handicappers. Pace figures break a race into fractional segments, tracking how fast a horse ran during the early, middle and closing portions of a race rather than just its overall final time. A horse that runs a fast early pace figure but weakens in the stretch has a very different style than one that always runs the other way, closing well after a more moderate early pace.

This is important, because pace scenarios can have a huge impact on how a race really runs. A field of horses that like to run on the lead can create a contested early pace, and one that will be faster than ideal, but one that is set up nicely for a horse that can close late from off the pace. On the other hand, a field of horses without any real speed horses may allow a front-runner to control the race from start to finish without much contest. When they are reading pace figures as well as overall speed figures, handicappers get a much fuller picture of how a particular race is likely to unfold rather than just which horse has posted the fastest overall times historically.

Class Ratings and Competition Level

The speed alone doesn’t tell the whole story because the quality of competition the horse has faced is just as important as the raw numbers the horse has put up. Class ratings try to measure the amount of competition in a given race, and knowing how a horse has fared against different class levels provides valuable context that speed figures alone cannot.

Even if the recent figures look good against weak competition, a horse stepping up in class, for example from a claiming race to stakes company, has a far more difficult task. Conversely, a horse dropping in class after running at a much higher level can sometimes be a real bargain, as the betting market doesn’t always fully factor in how much easier that horse’s new group is in reality. One of the easiest ways to make the distinction between true live contenders and horses whose recent form looks better on paper than it actually is, is when experienced handicappers cross-reference a horse’s speed figures with the class level at which those figures were earned.

Reading Form Cycles and Recent Performance Trends

A horse’s form, its recent running history, tends to come in cycles rather than being absolutely consistent throughout a season. When horses come off a layoff, i.e., a long period without racing, they often demonstrate a pattern of how quickly they come back to peak form. Some trainers have a proven record of having horses ready to win first time out of a break, while others typically require a race or two to get a horse sharpened back into competitive shape.

It’s important to know if a horse’s numbers are going up or down over the course of its last few races, not just how it ran in its last race. A horse whose figures have been gradually improving in successive races, even if it has not actually won, is often a better play than one whose recent figures have been gradually dropping, even if the overall record is superficially similar. This type of trend analysis looks at the entire recent form line of a horse rather than just the last race.

Workout Times and Pre-Race Indicators

In addition to actual races, the handicappers also review timed training sessions that horses complete in between races, known as workouts, as a data point that indicates current fitness and sharpness going into an upcoming start. A strong, well-timed effort in the days leading up to a race can be a sign of a horse peaking at the right time, especially with horses coming off a layoff where recent race-day figures just aren’t available yet.

But workout times should be taken with a grain of salt. Track conditions, whether a horse worked alone or with company, and how a workout compares to par times for a given distance can all factor into how meaningful a given workout actually is. The most experienced handicappers consider workout data a useful supplemental indicator, but not a predictor in itself, and it is used mainly to confirm or to raise questions about conclusions already drawn from a horse’s actual racing form.

Surface and Distance-Specific Performance Data

Thorough handicapping also involves pedigree and past performance data on surface and distance preferences. There are horses that have a clear statistical pattern of running significantly better figures on dirt than turf, or vice versa, and spotting these preferences before a horse switches surfaces for the first time can reveal value that the betting market hasn’t yet fully priced in.

Distance preferences are similar, and pedigree analysis often proves useful before a horse actually runs at a new distance. A horse whose sire line is known for producing distance horses may be a better play stretching out in distance for the first time than its sprint-oriented recent form would suggest, a distinction that becomes especially relevant during Triple Crown season, when three-year-olds are often asked to go farther than they have ever gone before.

Putting It All Together

No one stat tells the story alone, which is why seasoned handicappers cross reference speed figures, pace analysis, class ratings, form trends and surface or distance data together rather than relying on any one measure in isolation. For example, a horse with good recent speed figures but a bad pace fit for today’s race may be a worse play than the raw numbers suggest, while a horse with moderate overall figures but a clear pattern of running its best races when stretching out in distance may be a real value in the right spot.

That layered approach to analysis is what separates the occasional lucky guessers of favorites from the consistent value finders over a full season of racing. This is not a guarantee of picking winners, as there is always some unavoidable unpredictability due to real racing luck and trip trouble, but understanding these statistics dramatically improves the quality of the decisions being made before a single bet is placed.
