Understanding what these numbers actually measure and more importantly what they don’t capture is exactly what separates fans casually watching highlights from those who truly understand how a fight actually unfolded.

Significant Strikes

Takedown Statistics

This distinction makes a difference when considering how judges are likely to score a close round, because extended time in control tends to carry a lot of weight in official scoring, even if the fighter is not landing significant offense from that position. That said, control time on its own is not an indicator that a fighter is actually hurting their opponent, or working toward a finish, which is why serious analysis also looks at whether or not a fighter is creating offense from the top position, or simply holding position without meaningfully threatening a finish.

Submission attempts per fight are a rough indicator of a fighter’s grappling aggression, with fighters who have multiple attempts per contest generally pointing to a genuine finishing threat on the ground rather than someone content to simply dominate position for a decision. In a matchup of two dedicated strikers, significant strikes landed per minute and strikes absorbed per minute take on a much clearer role as leading indicators. In a matchup of a dedicated wrestler against a striker, the analytical focus shifts heavily to takedown accuracy and defense as the metrics most likely to determine how the fight actually plays out.
Reach differential adds another layer of utility, particularly in striking-heavy matchups, as a large reach advantage tends to matter more for a fighter’s finishing potential than their overall win probability, enabling longer fighters to land clean shots from range while avoiding return fire. To truly informed MMA analysis, be it to simply better understand a fight after the fact or to try to project how a future matchup might play out, the key is to cross-reference all of these statistics together, rather than focus on any one number.
